A PPA (Planning, Preparation, and Assessment) teacher plays a vital role in supporting schools by providing classroom cover while the main class teacher takes their statutory PPA time. Their main responsibility is to deliver high-quality lessons that maintain continuity in pupils’ learning, following the class teacher’s plans or adapting materials to meet the learning objectives. PPA teachers ensure that teaching standards and behaviour expectations remain consistent, allowing pupils to progress effectively even in the class teacher’s absence. They also contribute to assessing pupils’ understanding through marking, feedback, or informal observation, and communicate key information back to the class teacher. Overall, a PPA teacher helps sustain the smooth running of the school day, supports staff workload balance, and ensures pupils continue to receive engaging, effective learning experiences across the curriculum.
