Job description

Powertrain Test Engineer - batteries and e-drives, Wolverhampton

We are currently recruiting for an Automotive Test Engineer to join our Propulsion Technology Manufacturing Engineering (PTME) test team. The team supports future powertrain development, including batteries and e-drives, for our vehicle range, alongside internal combustion technology. You will be responsible for developing new, technologically advanced powertrain assembly & test facilities currently under design and manufacture to support global powertrain initiatives.

The Propulsion Technology Manufacturing Engineering department handles the development and introduction of new and modified processes and facilities related to new model launches and updates. This role is within the test department.

You will work closely with product development engineers, facility vendors, and test machine suppliers to ensure component and powertrain systems meet quality and efficiency standards.

Key Requirements
  • Experience in specifying, factory acceptance testing, delivering, and launching test cell facilities and inline test equipment, especially dynamometers and energy storage systems.
  • Experience in delivering new or retooled equipment into production as part of a project team.
  • Engineering qualification - HNC or above, preferably in electrical/electronic or manufacturing engineering, with knowledge of both electrical and mechanical systems.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement test processes and facilities to meet safety, quality, timing, and cost objectives.
  • Plan, develop, and implement e-drive and ICE test processes and facilities.
  • Provide feasibility assessments for product designs to meet manufacturing requirements.
  • Ensure robust process quality planning, including build simulations and FMEA.
  • Support virtual build events and physical builds at workshops and manufacturing sites.
  • Prepare and evaluate quotations, including technical and financial aspects.
  • Verify test processes and equipment at suppliers and manufacturing facilities.
  • Develop and monitor project timelines, supporting new model planning.
  • Manage technical issues, providing guidance and escalating when necessary.
  • Achieve equipment capability targets, including OPR, MTTR, and MTBF.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by line management.
Key Interactions
  • Work within cross-functional teams, supporting projects from concept to launch across global sites.
Qualifications

Essential:

  • Knowledge of process authoring tools (e.g., GSPAS).
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Experience with in-process test equipment, dyno facilities, and data interpretation.
  • Experience in facility installation, commissioning, and product launch.
  • Understanding of process and measurement capabilities, SPC, and capability studies.
  • Degree in manufacturing systems or similar engineering discipline, or HNC/HND with relevant experience.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of project management tools like PCDS.
  • Experience with facility validation and handover processes.
  • Ability to review engineering drawings and schematics.
  • Knowledge of simulation tools such as Digital-buck, Process Designer, Process Simulate, and CATIA V5.
