Job description

At National Grid, we light up the world by harnessing the unique strengths of our people. Join us as a Power System Engineer to be part of a team that's driving forward the energy transition, creating a brighter, more sustainable future for all.

Unleash your superpower and bring energy to life.

National Grid is hiring Power System Engineers for our Network Design Team based in Warwick.

About the role

You’ll play a key role in designing and developing the electricity transmission system, helping to ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation of NGET's transmission network. Working closely with customers, you’ll support compliance assessments for new network connections and contribute to the integration of emerging technologies such as HVDC, FACTS and renewable energy solutions. You’ll also have opportunities to be involved in innovation projects that are shaping the future of the energy industry.

Using a range of power system modelling and analysis techniques, including load flow, fault level, harmonic, EMT and control interaction studies, you’ll help ensure network developments meet industry standards and maintain system integrity.

We’re looking for candidates with a strong understanding of power system fundamentals and studies, supported by a bachelor's, master's or PhD in Power Systems Engineering or a related discipline.

What you’ll need

We’re looking for someone with a strong understanding of power systems, including power system analysis, modelling and their practical applications within electricity networks. You’ll have experience carrying out Power Factor and OLTA studies to identify network compliance issues, alongside the ability to apply critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills to develop effective and innovative network solutions.

A good working knowledge of industry codes and standards, including the SQSS, CUSC and Grid Code, is essential. As is the ability to contribute to well-defined technical work that delivers clear strategic and business outcomes.

You will also need experience in one or more of the following:

Connections:

An understanding of the regulatory and commercial environment that supports transmission customer connections. You’ll have knowledge of NETSSQS, an awareness of the RIIO price control framework and how customer connections activities contribute to performance outcomes, together with an appreciation of cost-benefit analysis in developing investment cases. Knowledge of major infrastructure processes, including LOTI and Development Consent Orders, would also be beneficial.

Power Quality and Dynamic Performance:

Experience in power system studies and AC/DC network design, including the use of RMS or EMT simulation tools such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory or PSCAD. You’ll have an understanding of power electronics-based technologies, such as HVDC, FACTS and renewable generation, alongside the ability to communicate technical information clearly to customers and a range of stakeholders. Experience within the power industry, consultancy or manufacturing environments would be advantageous.

Data and Modelling:

Experience in power system modelling and technical support, including model development, data assurance, quality management and the oversight of associated scripts and information flows. You’ll have programming skills in tools such as DPL and Python, with experience of customer engagement and exposure to the power industry or consultancy environments being advantageous.

System Access:

Knowledge of power system operations, including outage planning, network access and the impact of decisions on security of supply and consumer costs. You’ll have experience managing customer and stakeholder relationships, with an understanding of the economic considerations that influence power system operation and network planning.

Strategic Network Planning:

Experience in strategic network planning and the development of solutions that support future energy needs and net zero ambitions. You’ll have strong power system engineering and analysis expertise, including the application of Python for modelling, optimisation and data-driven problem solving, alongside the ability to build effective stakeholder relationships and clearly communicate whole-network requirements and solutions.

Detailed Network Design:

Experience supporting the integration of new projects into the electricity network, including defining technical requirements and ensuring power system analysis activities are effectively managed and communicated. You’ll have strong relationship-building skills, a good understanding of power electronics technologies such as HVDC, FACTS and renewable generation, and ideally some exposure to scripting tools such as Python or DPL.

Network Transformation:

Strong programming and data analytics skills, including experience using Python or DPL and tools such as Power BI or Power Apps. You’ll have experience managing technical projects and driving the development of new technologies and solutions, supported by excellent organisational and time management skills. Experience developing policies and procedures would be beneficial.

What you’ll get

Salary of between £56,000 - £70,000 per annum based on experience

  • Annual Performance Based Bonus.
  • 26 days annual leave plus eight statutory days.
