Job Description:

RINA is currently recruiting for a Power System Design Principal Consultant to join its office in Manchester within the Consulting Country UK Division.

Role Overview

The Principal Consultant will be a member of the RINA UK Engineering Team and will contribute towards the effective execution of the engineering functions within projects and tenders. The Principal Consultant will lead and work in a skilled team on a wide range of international T&D substation projects. The position will focus on project and tender engineering, including HV – substation design and construction projects, with a focus on electro-mechanical design to meet customer needs, legislative demands, and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical solutions for substations including single line diagrams, technical information, layouts, and detailed drawings in accordance with standards, processes, and customer specifications, utilizing resources locally and in other business units.
  • Develop technical concepts, specifications, select equipment and connection materials considering costs, quality, international standards, and materials.
  • Provide technical calculations, purchasing specifications, and schedules for project or tender equipment.
  • Prepare bills of quantities, cost estimations, deviations, and clarifications for technical solutions.
  • Review supplier designs, factory acceptance test plans, and participate in factory and site tests.
  • Lead engineering efforts on large and complex EHV/HV Air & Gas Insulated Substation projects (AIS & GIS).
  • Manage engineering budgets, schedules, forecasts, risks, and changes.
  • Ensure project KPIs are met as defined during the proposal stage.
  • Contribute to quality assurance by reviewing work, reporting, and ensuring deliverables meet standards.

Essential Experience and Qualifications

  • Thorough understanding of T&D theory with at least 10 years’ experience in Transmission & Distribution engineering.
  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant technical discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status.
  • Experience in power systems design up to 132kV (preferably up to 400kV) across various projects.
  • Extensive substation engineering experience, knowledge of legislative demands and standards.
  • Proficiency with simulation software and electrical circuit modeling tools.
  • Knowledge of system studies such as load flow, short circuit calculations, insulation coordination, and related diagrams and calculations.
  • Experience in secondary engineering, protection, and control systems.
  • Experience in installation and commissioning is a plus.
  • Strong skills in MS Office, with knowledge of MicroStation and AutoCAD.
