Full time starting salary is normally in the range £36,130 to £45,413 with potential progression once in post to £48,149

Role Summary

This is a new role within the M365 Team in IT Services, created to support the University’s strategic investment in automation and digital transformation. The post holder will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining automated workflows using Microsoft Power Platform tools, including Power Automate, Logic Apps, and Dataverse. The role will contribute to the delivery of efficient, scalable, and secure automation solutions across the University, working closely with business analysts, developers, and engagement partners.

You will be joining the University of Birmingham at the beginning of a digital transformation through an ambitious new initiative to accelerate innovation and automation across Professional Services. Supporting a newly formed Technology Innovation team, you will play a pivotal role in delivering AI, Innovation and automation solutions that enhance efficiency, streamline processes, and improve the staff and student experience. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a high-impact programme aligned with the University’s refreshed Digital Strategy and People and Culture Strategy. Main Duties

  • Design, develop, and maintain automated workflows using Power Automate (Cloud and Desktop) & Azure Logic Apps to streamline business processes across departments.
  • Build scalable and secure automation solutions using Power Automate (Cloud and Desktop) & Azure Logic Apps, integrating with internal and external systems.
  • Develop and manage data models and logic using Microsoft Dataverse, ensuring consistency and performance.
  • Create responsive and user-friendly applications using Power Apps to support business needs and enhance user experience.
  • Collaborate with Business Analysts and Engagement Partners to gather requirements, conduct feasibility assessments, and translate business needs into technical specifications.
  • Integrate Power Platform solutions with Microsoft 365 services (e.g., SharePoint, Teams, Outlook) and third-party APIs.
  • Provide technical support, training, and documentation to end-users and stakeholders to ensure adoption and effective use of automation tools.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimise automation workflows to ensure reliability, scalability, and compliance with IT governance.
  • Contribute to the development of automation standards, reusable components, and best practices within the M365 Team.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies including sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives, contributing to continuous improvement.
  • Support cross-functional automation initiatives and collaborate with Innovation Developers on advanced use cases and prototypes.
  • Promotes equality and values diversity, acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
  • Supports the University’s sustainability agenda through resource efficient working.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the grade.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

  • Educated to Degree level(or equivalent qualifications) or relevant technical qualification in IT, Computer Science, or a related field and considerable relevant experience.Where no equivalent qualification is held,significant practical relevant experience and expertise in a series of more demanding roles will be required demonstrating the conceptual understanding required.
  • In depth up to date specialist understanding and experience in a relevant scientific, technical or IT specialism.
  • Microsoft certifications in Power Platform or Azure (e.g., PL-100, PL-400, AZ-204) preferred.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development in automation, cloud technologies, or related areas.
  • Significant experience developing solutions using Power Automate, Power Apps, and Logic Apps.
  • Experience working in a Microsoft 365 environment with integration and automation responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering automation projects in a structured, agile environment.
  • Experience supporting users and delivering solutions in a large-scale, complex IT environment.
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft Power Platform, including Power Automate, Power Apps, and Logic Apps.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dataverse and integration with Microsoft 365 services.
  • Familiarity with scripting (e.g., PowerShell, JavaScript) and custom connector development.
  • Understanding of automation governance, security, and compliance frameworks.
  • Awareness of ITIL service management principles and agile delivery methodologies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent documentation, organisational, and time management skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience managing multiple tasks and priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Evidence of literacy and numeracy.
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of Azure Functions, Power BI, and other Microsoft cloud services.
  • Experience with Leapwork or other RPA tools.
  • Understanding of Higher Education environments and digital transformation strategies

Role context

Roles at this level will require in-depth specialist technical/specialist/IT expertise.Role holders may have supervisory responsibility for a technical service or team, where the primary focus will be on planning, overseeing and reviewing the work of the team and/or will operate as individual technical, specialist or IT experts either supporting service delivery or contributing directly to local project implementation or problem solving through the provision of specialist support activity.
