The Oxford Martin School, located at 34 Broad Street, Oxford, OX1 3BD, is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher for the Oxford Martin AI Governance Initiative (AIGI Oxford). The initiative aims to enhance the societal impact of AI through rigorous research grounded in social and computational sciences, decision-maker education, and training future technology governance leaders. It uniquely focuses on AI governance from both technical and policy perspectives.
The successful candidate will conduct research in systems modeling, including graphical causal modeling and the foundational methodologies of technology governance studies. Responsibilities include developing safety cases for AI systems, exploring model interpretability, explainability, and verification methods—particularly white box techniques and causality-based control methods. The role involves working on projects that integrate technical AI capabilities with governance needs, supporting regulatory frameworks, and fostering stakeholder trust.
This position offers flexibility to explore various research avenues within the initiative’s mission, such as political risk frameworks, economic subsystem interactions, and multi-agent systems. The candidate will also mentor junior researchers and collaborate across disciplines, including engineering, computer science, government, and law.
