Job description

The Role

This post holder will be responsible for developing next-generation non-terrestrial networking (NTN) technologies and demonstrations, including satellite, UAV-based edge computing, integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), and their applications (particularly in securing and rural scenarios). The post holder will support Dr. Zhuangkun Wei and Prof. Hongjian Sun. They will proactively engage with academic, postdoctoral research, technical support colleagues, students, industry partners, and external collaborators to ensure activities meet high standards.

Key responsibilities:

The post holder will collaborate with the Communication and THz Node and the Durham Smart Grid Laboratory, which has over 20 researchers and is a leading facility in smart grid and 6G communications research. The group is equipped with advanced resources, including:

  • UAVs for communication protocol, edge computing, and control algorithm development;
  • THz transceivers for high-frequency communication channel measurement and sensing;
  • Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) and Solar & Wind Emulator for power system and renewable energy analysis;
  • BubbleRAN platform for ORAN research and testing;
  • OPAL-RT for real-time hardware-in-the-loop testing;
  • Smart meters and appliances for demand-side management and energy efficiency studies;
  • High-performance computing systems supporting AI, LLM, and advanced algorithm development for 6G, grid management, and renewable energy forecasting.
