ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an innovative Postdoctoral Research Associate with a background in Human-Computer Interaction and a strong interest in Responsible AI to join our interdisciplinary team. The role involves investigating Probabilistic AI in Law Enforcement Futures, with expertise in Design Fiction and Speculative Design methodologies being highly desirable.

PROBabLE Futures – Probabilistic Systems in Law Enforcement Futures is a funded Responsible AI UK (RAi UK) Keystone Project. It brings together academics, Law Enforcement, Government, Third Sector, and Commercial AI Industry partners to explore responsible approaches to Probabilistic AI in law enforcement. This 4-year project, led by Northumbria University, involves collaboration with researchers from Glasgow, Northampton, Leicester, Cambridge, and Aberdeen Universities. The project includes stakeholder engagement to analyze and map the Probabilistic AI ecosystem, investigate case studies, and explore future AI applications in law enforcement. The project aims to develop a future-oriented framework for responsible AI in law enforcement and criminal justice.

The candidate will be based in the Northumbria Social Computing (NorSC) research group within the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, working collaboratively with researchers from law and machine learning, as well as law enforcement, third sector, and industry partners.

This is a fixed-term role until 31 March 2028. Interviews are scheduled for the week commencing 18th November 2024.

ABOUT THE TEAM

This project is delivered within the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, as part of the PROBabLE Futures Keystone Project. The team collaborates with law enforcement, third sector, and commercial partners to develop frameworks addressing uncertainty and building confidence in Probabilistic AI, prioritizing justice and responsibility. The project is funded by UKRI and includes academic Co-Is across disciplines, along with partners from law enforcement and industry.

ABOUT YOU

Applicants should hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in Human-Computer Interaction or a related field, with demonstrated expertise in Interaction Design. A strong understanding of AI explainability, fairness, and the ethical, regulatory, and technical issues associated with AI in law enforcement and the public sector is desirable.
