The University of Manchester is inviting applications for a Research Associate position within the Physics of Fluids and Soft Matter group in the Department of Physics & Astronomy. The successful candidate will join a vibrant team focused on flow instabilities and fluid-structure interactions at low Reynolds numbers.
We seek an individual with research experience in mechanics of flexible structures, preferably with a background in mechanical metamaterials, either experimentally or theoretically. The role, supervised by Dr. Draga Pihler-Puzovic, will commence before 1st October 2025 and focus on designing novel mechanical metamaterials inspired by the vertebral column of a hero shrew spine.
Applicants should hold, or be about to obtain, a PhD (or equivalent) in physics, engineering, or applied mathematics. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to solve problems related to mechanics of flexible structures and experience with mechanical metamaterials. We welcome applications from both experimentalists and modelers who demonstrate effective collaboration within diverse teams. Candidates should be well-organized, self-motivated, and possess excellent communication skills. A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals is advantageous.
