Job summary

Heriot-Watt University in Scotland seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Quantum Photonics Laboratory. You will develop a multimodal quantum sensing microscope and validate it on biological samples, collaborating with academic and industrial partners to publish high-impact work.

The role includes training, secondments, and a tailored career development plan, with a 24-month fixed-term appointment in a vibrant quantum bio-imaging environment.

Qualifications

• PhD (or equivalent) in physics, electrical engineering, or closely related discipline, or expected to submit before starting.
• Strong understanding of optics, solid-state physics and quantum mechanics; hands-on experience with SPAD arrays is a plus.
• Experience programming for device control, data acquisition and analysis (C++, Python or MATLAB).
• Experience designing and conducting independent research projects and analysing complex datasets.

Responsibilities

• Develop a multimodal quantum sensing microscope.
• Develop and validate quantum-sensing protocols and apply them to biological samples.
• Design experiments, acquire and analyse data, perform modelling/simulation as required.
• Contribute to IP generation and translational pathways.
• Collaborate across the group and with external partners; supervise students where needed.
• Disseminate results via publications and conferences; maintain rigorous records.
