Job summary

The University of Sheffield is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to join the Mechanisms of Health & Disease group within the School of Clinical Dentistry. You will work on FlexiSense, a soft sensorised glove, combining flexible electronics, textile manufacturing and multimodal sensing to assess hand function in neurological conditions.

Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent experience in bioengineering, electronic/electrical engineering, materials science, biomedical engineering, medical device development or related discipline.
  • Proven ability in research and evidence of research output.
  • Specialist knowledge in flexible electronics, sensor fabrication, additive manufacturing/3D printing, printed electronics or wearable device development.
  • Experience of sensor characterisation, experimental design and quantitative data analysis.
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary MedTech research environment involving engineering, clinical and translational stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Experience with wearable biosignal recording or related modalities (Desirable).
  • Interest in MedTech translation, usability work, market validation, health-economics/value cases or regulatory/quality documentation (Desirable).

Responsibilities

  • Assist with relevant research as directed by the project proposal to achieve milestones.
  • Optimise manufacture of soft, multimodal sensorised gloves using textile-based additive manufacturing and printed electronics.
  • Develop and apply experimental protocols for bench characterisation of sensor performance and robustness.
  • Analyse data from mechanical, electrical and biosignal measurements with detailed records.
  • Collaborate with clinicians, translators and commercialisation staff to meet project objectives.
  • Contribute to translational and commercial outputs, including market segmentation and sponsor/CRO interviews.
