Job summary

The University of Exeter invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow in Philosophy and Ethics to work on the GENERAL‑AI project. The role focuses on AI ethics, law, policy, and the moral implications of military AI in decision-making.

The successful candidate will conduct rigorous research, publish findings, and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team within the Strategy and Security Institute and Defence Data Research Centre.

Qualifications

• PhD in philosophy or closely related field.
• Evidence of research excellence and publication record.
• Ability to plan and conduct independent research.

Responsibilities

• Undertake research for Work Package 3 (WP3), AI Ethics.
• Critically analyse debates on autonomy, agency and responsibility.
• Examine human-AI decision loops and moral agency.
• Analyze ethical responsibilities of commanders using AI in defence.
• Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences.
• Collaborate with the GENERAL‑AI team and develop an independent research program.
