Post Graduate Teaching Assistant, London

Overview

We are seeking Postgraduate Teaching Assistants to support teaching and learning activities for the upcoming academic session at UCL. Responsibilities may include:

  • Facilitating laboratory practical sessions
  • Supporting small-group project work and tutorials
  • Assisting with marking and providing feedback
  • Helping to prepare teaching materials

Responsibilities will vary depending on the module(s) and departmental needs.

About You

We invite applications from highly motivated individuals who are current or prospective doctoral (PhD) students at UCL. Applicants must be enrolled on an MPhil programme to be eligible. Candidates must:

  • Be registered UCL research students at the time of appointment
  • Have the right to work in the UK

Some roles do not require specialist skills, as training will be provided. However, desired skills include:

  • Knowledge of analogue electronics and electrical engineering
  • Experience with CAD software (Solidworks, Fusion) and 3D printing
  • Technical drawing skills
  • Bio-impedance measurement experience
  • Matlab and/or Simulink proficiency
  • Arduino programming experience
  • Python programming skills
  • Design and DIY skills
  • Physics background with optics, waves, thermodynamics, solid state physics, or nuclear medicine knowledge
  • Mechanical engineering knowledge, including materials and dynamics, and experience with Instron machines

Applicants must provide valid right-to-work documentation, such as a current passport and applicable visa (share code), before confirmation.

What We Offer

This role is offered under an average-hours contract, distributing hours evenly over the contract duration, ensuring consistent, prorated monthly payments. All new PGTAs start at the first spinal point of Grade 6, with prior experience from the previous academic session leading to an advancement by one spinal point.

UCL PGTAs are entitled to sick leave and pay, as outlined in the employment terms. Sick pay is included in the regular salary, and annual leave pay is automatically calculated based on hours worked monthly.
