Job description

Development programmes for PhDs and postdocs who want to make a difference.

If you are enthusiastic and have a strong interest in healthcare, we have a wide range of programmes for PhD and postdoc candidates from a scientific, research, medical or consulting background.

From Esprit, our leading global talent development programme, through to our R&D development programme, which trains the next generation of vaccine scientists, we need the very best talent to help us make an impact on people’s health across the world. Explore how we can drive progress together.

Postdoctoral R&D

Are you an exceptional Postdoc or PhD scientist with strategic decision-making skills? If you would like to work on critical R&D challenges in the pre-competitive space, then consider joining our postdoctoral R&D programme.

You can expect to work on critical R&D challenges in the pre-competitive space, with opportunities for publications in high-impact journals and presentations, while gaining a deeper understanding of translating drug discovery into medicines or vaccines for patients.

At the start of the programme, you will work with your supervisor to develop a research plan with clear timelines, milestones, objectives, and responsibilities (up to three years).

During this time, you will have access to our extensive R&D resources, including tools, technologies, libraries, samples, and events.

On the programme, you will:

  • Be at the forefront of science
  • Learn how we bridge the gap from target identification to medicines or vaccines for patients
  • Join a multi-disciplinary drug research and development team working on high-risk, innovative science to address critical R&D challenges
  • Prepare for careers in industry, government, non-profits, or academia

We seek exceptional PhD scientists with strategic decision-making skills, proven scientific capability, innovation, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.

Postdoc positions are available throughout the year for specific projects. Please search for openings using our search and apply tool.

Many postdocs have found the programme rewarding. For example, Nikita, a Postdoctoral Research Associate in R&D, shared that they applied to make a difference in drug discovery and development, applying and expanding their expertise, and benefiting from extensive networking opportunities. Catherine, also a Postdoctoral Research Associate, highlighted the environment's collaborative nature and the opportunity to work at the interface of academia and industry.

Postdoctoral Immunology Catalyst

If you are an outstanding PhD scientist in immunology or a related field, you could join our world-class Immunology Catalyst R&D facility.

The Immunology Catalyst, based in Stevenage, hosts leading academic immunologists working alongside GSK scientists on independent research. This opportunity lasts up to three years.

As a postdoctoral fellow, you will be mentored by a top immunologist, developing skills to become an independent investigator, with opportunities to publish and deepen your understanding of drug discovery. You will design your research with your supervisor, with clear milestones and objectives.

This programme prepares you for careers in academia, industry, regulatory agencies, or healthcare non-profits.
