The University of Reading’s Department of Meteorology is a thriving community of over 200 academics, research scientists and research students with a strong international reputation in weather and climate research. We seek to recruit an enthusiastic researcher interested in using state-of-the-art climate models to improve understanding of the climate impact of human activity.

Can hydrogen really be a green fuel, or do its climate effects significantly offset the reductions in fossil fuel use? That is what you will be discovering in this exciting project that has the possibility to influence climate policy. Hydrogen indirectly influences climate via atmospheric chemistry on methane, ozone, aerosols and stratospheric water vapour.

You will work as part of the European Horizon project HYway lead by CICERO in Oslo to quantify the sources and sinks of hydrogen in the atmosphere and understand how these affect its climate impacts.

The role will be to analyse the outputs from Earth system models that include hydrogen chemistry to quantify the individual components of the hydrogen budget, and to use observations to constrain these utilising box models.

This will be original research carried forward to publications in leading peer-reviewed journals, and presented at national and international scientific meetings.

The job holder will interact with European project partners, attend European project meetings, and contribute to the departmental research environment (e.g., seminars and group meetings).

You will have:

  • PhD or equivalent in physical sciences or applied mathematics, or be close to finishing one
  • Knowledge of Quantitative physical or mathematical sciences
  • Experience in analysing data from climate or other large numerical models
  • Scientific analysis skills
