The successful post holder will be expected to maintain professionalism and awareness of the potential risks for patients, themselves, and other colleagues, always.
The role of the Positive Intervention Programme Practitioner is to work collaboratively with the Charge Nurses, Occupational Therapists , and care team to provide therapeutic activity to services users in Long Term Segregation and Seclusion or those that may be identified as requiring additional support due to clinical acuity. Applicants must have 12 months experience in a Mental Health Care setting.
The Positive Interventions Team are a highly specialist which co-ordinate care plan and risk manage activity sessions with long term segregation and seclusion patients. The role includes assisting the clinical Team
Leader with care planning, therapeutic activity and exercise, taking into account risk managing interventions. This role requires a high level of interpersonal skills, good personal judgement, flexibility and
commitment to work with some of the most complex and challenging individuals in the psychiatric system.
The PIPs practitioner will work with core clinical staff to offer a range of activities both on and off ward to patients who are in long term segregation and seclusion. The PIPs practitioner is responsible for the safety of the patient, themselves and other staff members while they are engaged in the activity and being moved around the hospital site.
The PIPs practitioner will work as part of a multidisciplinary team ensuring effective relationships with patients and that operational security is maintained.

To assist in the development of and implementation of patient therapeutic/rehabilitative programmes in conjunction with other members of the team.
To contribute to the delivery of a planned programme of care in collaboration with charge nurse, OT and the care team.
To contribute to the formulation of patient care plans to meet the identified needs.
To develop effective relationships with Patient Care Teams and pro-actively support rehabilitation activities for patients.
To assist the clinical team by being proactive in maximizing health, well being and social inclusion of service users.
To report general observations and provide feedback to the charge nurse both verbally and in written formats. This should include any concerns arising from the service-users physical, mental health or risks.
To be responsive and work effectively and collaboratively with other PIPs practitioners and clinical teams.
To participate in the communication process with wards throughout the hospital via the radio communications network in order to ensure patients movements and numbers are accurately monitored and carried out.
To use a variety of verbal and non-verbal skills to overcome communication barriers presented by service-users due to their mental health needs.
To take responsibility for own development through the PACE process and will participate in regular supervision and reflective practice.
To ensure a safe and secure therapeutic environment for patients, staff and visitors in line with current Health & Safety legislation and in relation to the Hospital Security Manual. This includes infection control issues.
To maintain accurate charts where required that contribute to the assessment of a service-users physical condition e.g., weight or blood pressure, pulse and temperature.
To prepare a report as required to be submitted to the Reducing Restrictive Practice Monitoring Group and care team. The PIPs practitioner will also make daily clinical entries to reflect their interventions with patients in Long Term Segregation and seclusion.
To use skills and techniques, gained during mandatory training, to de-escalate situations where service-users become physically or verbally aggressive.
To ensure that tools and equipment are used and stored in a safe and secure manner.
To report on incidents and complaints as required in accordance with current format and guidelines.
