Job summary

Birchwood School in Cardiff is seeking a Positive Behaviour Learning Support Assistant to join our specialist team. This term-time, full-time role supports pupils with additional learning needs and promotes positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing.

You will work with teaching staff and a multidisciplinary team to deliver targeted interventions, build confidence, and help pupils reach their learning potential in a nurturing environment.

Qualifications

• Experience working with children or young people with additional learning needs.
• Calm, patient and empathetic approach to supporting learners.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct support to pupils during periods of emotional dysregulation or challenging behaviour, ensuring safety and dignity.
• Sign off and quality check radar reports.
• Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils to encourage engagement and development.
• Support the implementation of positive behaviour support (PBS) strategies and individual behaviour plans.
• Model best practice in behaviour management and de-escalation techniques for colleagues.
• Coach and mentor staff following observations.
• Work with teachers, therapists and other professionals to promote positive outcomes.
• Assist in identifying behaviour patterns and contributing to behaviour assessments and support plans.
• Deliver targeted interventions to develop emotional regulation, communication and social skills.
• Support staff training and promote a proactive approach to behaviour support.
