Job description

We are working with an established UK venture capital firm looking to appoint a Portfolio Director to take a leading role in the management and development of its portfolio businesses.

This is a senior, board-level position focused on working closely with founders and leadership teams to strengthen commercial performance, navigate strategic challenges and maximise value ahead of future funding rounds or exits.

Unlike a traditional investment role, the emphasis is on portfolio management and value creation rather than originating and executing new investments.

The Opportunity:

Taking responsibility for a diverse portfolio of growth-stage businesses, you will represent the investor at board level, acting as a trusted adviser to management teams while providing strategic oversight and practical commercial support.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Representing the investor on portfolio company boards, providing strategic guidance and constructive challenge.
• Working with management teams to identify growth opportunities, improve performance and address commercial or operational challenges.
• Supporting fundraising, follow-on investment rounds and relationships with external investors and advisers.
• Preparing businesses for potential exits, identifying key value drivers and strengthening their positioning for future buyers.
• Supporting senior leadership appointments and facilitating introductions to relevant customers, commercial partners and investors.
• Overseeing portfolio performance, valuations and investment reporting.

About You:

We are looking for a commercially astute individual with significant experience supporting, scaling or investing in growth-stage businesses.

You may already be working in a senior portfolio management or value creation role within venture capital or growth equity. Equally, you could be a former founder, CEO or senior operator who has built and scaled a business, worked closely with investors and boards, and understands the challenges of driving growth and creating shareholder value.

We are particularly interested in individuals who can demonstrate:

• Strong commercial judgement and an understanding of what drives enterprise value.
• Meaningful board-level experience and the credibility to influence and challenge senior leadership teams.
• Experience navigating strategic, commercial or operational challenges within growing businesses.
• An understanding of fundraising, investment processes and exit preparation.
• The ability to manage multiple priorities across different businesses and sectors.
• A practical, solutions-focused approach, combining strategic thinking with a willingness to get involved.

Experience working with founder-led businesses in a minority investment environment would be particularly valuable.
