Job description
Overview

As a Porter, you'll be expected to carry out a variety of tasks throughout your shift. You'll be on the move, walking long distances while transporting patients, equipment, furniture, waste, laundry, notes, specimens, and more across our Trust sites. You will provide a thorough portering service for the Facilities Operations department, ensuring everything is moved safely and that equipment is cleaned and checked for faults. You will work closely with patients, visitors, and colleagues, always maintaining a polite and courteous manner. You will be involved in our onsite courier service, helping with deliveries around the Trust sites.

Responsibilities
  • Provide a comprehensive porter service for the Facilities department and ensure safe movement of patients, equipment, furniture, waste, laundry, notes, specimens, and other items around our Trust sites.
  • Ensure equipment is cleaned and regularly checked for faults.
  • Work with patients, visitors, and colleagues in a polite and courteous manner.
  • Take part in the Trust's courier service, including deliveries around community sites.
  • Move patients safely around the hospital by whatever means (stretcher, wheelchair, trolley, etc.).
  • Collect and deliver items such as mail, patient notes, waste, laundry, medical gas cylinders, and laboratory specimens with appropriate handling equipment.
  • Deliver hospital supply cages to wards and departments and collect/return empty cages.
  • Maintain daily vehicle sheets and submit to supervisor; keep vehicles clean.
  • Ensure department equipment (trolleys, wheelchairs, bed movers, etc.) are cleaned regularly and faults reported immediately.
  • Clean/disinfect wheelchairs and trolleys between patients as necessary.
  • Provide portering services to residential areas regarding delivery and sorting of mail, linen, dirty laundry, movement of furniture, stores, and equipment.
