Haematology services at Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital are looking for you. They want to give you experience in managing haematology and patients in an inpatient, outpatient and day unit setting. Whilst also supporting the acute assessment of patients and facilitating their prompt initial management and admission, the post holder will have the opportunity to develop skills and experience in Clinical Haematology. The post would be ideal for acquiring competencies needed towards a national training number in Haematology or Oncology.

There will be lots of opportunities to spend time in both haematology outpatient clinics to gain experience in malignant and non-malignant haematology, and also take part in diagnostic procedures dependant on the candidate’s level of interest. Previous post holders have successfully gained National Training numbers in Oncology and Haematology.

Main duties of the job

This post will provide medical input for Haematology inpatients and outpatients attending for clinics and treatment. The post will also include participation in the provision of the Acute Oncology service.

The post will be cross-site with 6 months at Winchester and 6 months at Basingstoke. There will be weekend on calls covering the haematology ward at Basingstoke.

Wessex is our 10 bedded Haematology ward and we provide our outpatient appointments and acute oncology service in our purpose built chemotherapy unit- The Rainbow Unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Inpatient haematology care on Wessex ward – including patients with new diagnosis of acute leukaemia and receiving intensive chemotherapy

• Participation in Acute Oncology Service - assessment, review, advice and intervention of patients receiving chemotherapy

• OP clinics including review.

• Attendance at site specific MDT and laboratory meetings

• Transfusion medicine and bone marrow biopsies.

Person specification

Training & Qualifications

  • GMC
  • 2 years post registration clinical practice
  • Basic Life Support
  • MRCP – or working towards Good Clinical Practice Training
  • Advanced Communication Skills Course
  • Advanced Life support

Experience & Knowledge

  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team
  • Previous experience of working in the NHS
  • Experience in oncology/clinical haematology
  • Involvement in undergraduate and post graduate medical teaching

Skills & Ability

  • Good clinical and interpersonal skills
  • Good verbal and written communication
  • Ability to work in a team with ability to motivate others
