Job Opportunity: Permanent General Terminal Operatives

An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen for Permanent General Terminal Operatives to join a leading port operating company in Marchwood, Southampton, Hampshire. This role offers attractive long-term job stability and opportunities to see the world.

Our client operates the Port of Marchwood and provides port services to the Ministry of Defence (MoD). We are recruiting Terminal Operatives to support port operations within the facility.

Responsibilities include:

  • Carrying out cargo operations, including mooring vessels, loading/unloading, and securing cargo.
  • Full training will be provided for the use of specialised heavy plant and machinery, with industry qualifications.

There are opportunities to deploy worldwide on short assignments (2-5 days) to locations such as Africa, Middle East, Europe, and America, and longer deployments (up to 6 months) to carry out vessel operations.

To support the MoD both in the UK and overseas, applicants will be trained to become Sponsored Reserves (SR). SRs gain experience in both MoD and civilian environments, providing global exposure. This involves up to 38 days per year of specialist trade training with the Army, including obtaining a Cat C HGV licence and familiarisation with military vehicles. All training occurs during work hours, with no wider service obligation to the Army.

This role is also suitable for serving Army, Navy, or RAF Reservists who can transfer without repeating the Forces application process, subject to terms and conditions.

Salary and Bonuses

Basic salary: £24,522 per annum, with bonuses including:

  • £2,300 taxable bonus upon completion of Sponsored Reserve training
  • £1,759 tax-free annually from Year 5 onwards
  • Additional payment of £1,000 per month (up to £6,000 for 6 months) when working abroad

Additional Information
  • Opportunity to progress from Terminal Operator to Leading Hand to Terminal Supervisor
  • Experience in Stevedoring/Port Operations required
  • UK or Commonwealth Citizen
  • Resided in the UK for the last 5 years
  • Valid UK driving licence and passport (minimum six months validity)
  • Aged 18-43 (regular service personnel age limit up to 50)
  • Physically fit and able to pass medical
  • Ability to work at heights and in enclosed spaces
  • UK Government Security Clearance and signing the Official Secrets Act
  • Compliance with safety, environmental, and security policies
  • Aptitude for learning new skills and flexible outlook
  • Previous military experience preferred
  • GCSE English and Mathematics (grades A*-G) or willing to undertake entry-level literacy and numeracy tests
