Port Hydrographer – South East

Job summary

The Port Hydrographer is responsible for conducting hydrographic surveys, managing dredging contracts, overseeing the maintenance of aids to navigation, and handling the port’s disposal license and capital applications. This role demands technical expertise in hydrographic surveying, as well as strong project management skills to ensure navigational safety, regulatory compliance, and efficient port operations.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Degree in geography, hydrogeology, geophysics, or any other subject that might be related – Licence holder of an accredited hydrographic qualification to IHO Cat A standard
  • At least one year’s practical experience in hydrographic surveying, including inshore survey techniques
  • At least one year’s practical experience using multi beam survey systems and processing the associated data
  • Proficient with current computer systems, RTK, GPS, Autocad systems, sound navigation systems and SONARs
  • Knowledge of Aids to Navigation systems, both fixed or in the water, including maintenance programmes
  • Experience in the operation of small boats
  • Ability to work near/on the water and on the port’s vessels in a non-seafarer capacity
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
