Job Description:

The British Lung Foundation is the only UK charity for all types of lung conditions – from COPD, pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer to mesothelioma and asthma. It funds vital medical research; campaigns against air pollution and for better services; and produces award-winning information that helps patients and their families.

Building on recent campaign successes, including legislation related to smoking in cars and tobacco packaging, the British Lung Foundation seeks a new Policy and Public Affairs Manager to join its multi-award-winning Communications team.

The Role

The Policy and Public Affairs Manager develops and implements the public affairs strategy and creates policies aligned with the charity’s aims. You will lead targeted public affairs activities to influence health policy, aiming to prevent lung disease and support those affected.

You will oversee research and development of organisational policies on lung health in the UK, identifying opportunities to improve lung health nationally. Reporting to the Director of Communications, this role involves managing three direct reports and is integral to the communications team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and manage relationships with external stakeholders such as MPs, peers, Department of Health officials, NHS England, Public Health England, NICE, and others.
  • Manage research and drafting of policy positions on various issues.
  • Stay informed on political developments and health policy changes.

Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of parliamentary procedures and healthcare systems.
  • Strategic thinker, effective networker, and influencer with success in creative lobbying.
  • Strong understanding of UK health care policy and processes.
  • Experience in managing direct reports and budgets.
  • Experience working with patient groups.
  • Non-smoker (desirable).
  • Comfort with BLF medical research, including occasional animal research.

In addition to a competitive salary, benefits include a cycle-to-work scheme, interest-free Travelcard loan, 30 days annual leave plus Bank Holidays, pension scheme, and more.
