Overview

Do you have a naturally inquisitive mind and enjoy problem solving?

We are recruiting Police Staff Investigator Trainees to join our Custody Interview Teams investigation department within Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, starting on one of three intake dates: 27th April 2026, 21st September 2026, or 11th January 2027. Vacancies are based in Basingstoke, Newport (Isle of Wight), Portsmouth and Southampton.

A Police Staff Investigator has a challenging and rewarding role. You will need to devise and execute objective investigative strategies, including gathering evidence, interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects, and working to achieve justice for our communities.

A typical day may involve being on a day or late shift, arriving at the investigation centre to assist or lead in an investigation. This may involve attending the scene of the incident, speaking to witnesses, identifying and gathering vital evidence, and interviewing the suspect in custody to prepare an investigative case file to present to the CPS. You could also be required to give evidence in Court. Some cases you’ll work alone, others alongside PSI colleagues, Police Constables and Detectives; no day will be the same.

Training and development

Our Police Staff Investigator trainees initially take part in a comprehensive modular, classroom-based course. In addition to mentoring and assessment while investigating current jobs, you will be supported by our experienced teams throughout your training and you will become an important member of the investigation team.

As a trainee you will be trained in the Professionalising Investigation Programme level 1 (PIP1). This will develop and progress your interviewing and investigative skills so you can provide the best possible service to the public.

There are development opportunities to progress to a PIP level 2 investigator and move laterally between the specialist investigation departments.

We value people from different backgrounds and cultures; diversity in thinking brings great results. Empathy and a sharp mind are important, and you need to be a confident communicator in person and on paper.

We offer flexible working, however you must be able to commit to completing the training courses required.

Salary and Other Benefits

In addition to a highly rewarding career and a competitive base salary of £29,109 - £34,329 per annum, you’ll receive shift enhancements (shifts include evenings and weekends), making your potential earnings higher. Our benefits are extensive too and include:

  • Family friendly policies supporting those with caring responsibilities
  • Generous annual leave entitlement starting at 24 days (pro-rata for part-time workers) in addition to public holidays, rising to 29 after five years’ service
  • Access to a wide range of learning and development opportunities
  • Retail, holiday and leisure discounts through Hampshire Police Leisure and Sports Club or Blue Light Card
  • Excellent wellbeing support including onsite wellbeing rooms and access to Employee Assistance Programme
  • Staff representation groups and inclusion network
  • Gym facilities at a number of our buildings

You also have the opportunity to be part of a large organisation with potential for development and progression. You’ll have the opportunity to tailor your career as you choose, whether that be working at Detective level (PIP 2) or within a range of our specialist crime departments.

Educated to QCF Level 2 with three to five passes including English and Mathematics or relevant work experience deemed to have brought the post holder to a similar level.

You must also hold a full driving licence and be 18 years old or over.
