Job description

JOB TITLE: Police Staff Investigator

REPORTING TO: Birmingham Investigations Detective Sergeants

SPECIFIC ROLE PURPOSE: Working as part of an investigative team, gathering and securing evidence to identify suspects and support criminal investigations.

Vacancies are available across various locations within Birmingham, including Perry Barr, Stechford, and Bournville. Please specify your preferred area in the questions section.

SPECIFIC ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Take written statements from witnesses as directed by the Sergeant or investigating officer, following guidelines to achieve the best evidence in criminal proceedings.
  2. Ensure enquiries are carried out expeditiously as directed by the Sergeant or investigating officer, in accordance with investigation policy.
  3. Secure and preserve the best evidence through thorough investigation to detect crime and prosecute offenders, including:
    • Retrieval, retention, and reviewing of CCTV
    • Conducting house-to-house enquiries and completing relevant actions
  4. Comply with all relevant legislation, such as Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, The Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996, Data Protection Act 1998, and all applicable rules and guidance.
  5. Utilise all appropriate ICT systems to research, produce, and submit statements, reports, and intelligence logs.
  6. Obtain and secure evidence and exhibits, maintaining their integrity and preventing contamination.
  7. Develop identification of suspects and support in ID procedures.
  8. Research and maintain up-to-date knowledge of current enquiries, attending and contributing to briefings.
  9. Complete all documentation, including actions and reports, in a timely and professional manner.
  10. Assist with the preparation of evidence files and give evidence at court as required.
  11. Perform any other duties commensurate with the role and grade.

SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE

Knowledge & Experience

  • Ability to write clear, concise, and accurate reports.
  • Experience of working in an environment dealing with the public.
  • Working knowledge of confidentiality and data protection issues.
  • Willingness to undertake training such as Personal Safety Training, West Midlands Police IT Systems, and Investigation modules.
  • Experience of working effectively in a team.

Desirable:

  • Investigation and evidence gathering experience.
  • Previous experience in criminal law and the criminal justice system.
  • Knowledge of police policy and procedures related to the role.
  • Experience of dealing with conflict and working in multi-agency environments.

Skills

  • Competent IT skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivation and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage workloads effectively.
  • Must hold a full UK driving license and be willing to pass the WMP driving test for unmarked police vehicles if required.

HOURS OF WORK AND FLEXIBILITY

  • Contracted hours are between 8am and 8pm, including late shifts and weekends, with appropriate compensation.
  • May require work outside these hours, including bank holidays and on short notice, considering individual circumstances.
  • The role may involve force-wide duties and travel outside the force area to support investigations.

Allowances

The role offers a 14.41% weekend allowance.

Vetting

Successful applicants must pass Recruitment Vetting and Counter Terrorism Clearance, including background and financial checks.

Role appointment may depend on medical checks, including drugs and fitness tests.

Probation Policy

Current WMP staff on probation cannot apply for other police staff roles unless supported by their line manager, which would restart their probation period.
