Police Community Support Officer - (PCSO)

Thinking of a new challenge?

Looking for a genuinely rewarding job?

There are few jobs that can offer the variety, meaning and excitement than that of a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO). If you have the drive and desire to make a real difference in your community, then the role of PCSO may be for you.

The role of PCSO

As a PCSO you will act as the eyes and ears on the streets, providing a reassuring presence in tackling the issues that matter most to our communities. No day is the same, you could be visiting a victim of crime, dealing with anti-social behaviour, visiting schools, or engaging in many other ways with local communities to identify appropriate support available to them.

What To Expect

You will need to be able to work under your own initiative and be resilient in dealing with a variety of incidents, remaining professional and acting with dignity and respect at all times. A self-motivated individual committed to delivering excellent customer service and a team player who can work effectively in teams within North Yorkshire Police as well as with partners and community groups. Quick to establish authentic relationships, with a genuine interest in helping others and appreciating the views from the communities we serve.

PCSOs are an increasingly important part of the police 'family' and their role is an interesting and evolving one. We are particularly keen to hear from applicants from diverse backgrounds.

Standard shift pattern: 6 on, 3 off. Day shifts 8.00am 16.00pm. Late shifts 15.00pm 00.00pm.

All PCSOs will now be able to earn while you learn. Working in Partnership with the Open University, North Yorkshire Police PCSOs will combine hands on training with studying for a Certificate in Higher Education in Community Policing Practice.

North Yorkshire Police Can Offer You

  • A starting salary of £26,106
  • Shift allowance and weekend working allowance
  • The chance to earn while you learn: achieve a Certificate in Higher Education in Community Policing Practice
  • Family friendly and flexible working policies and procedures, to promote a healthy work-life balance
  • Inclusion in the Local Government Pension Scheme

Eligibility To Apply

  • You must be aged 17 or over at the point of application and must be 18 by the time you are appointed.
  • You must possess a Level 2 Qualification in Maths and English Language (equivalent to GCSE grade A-C or Level 4 or above). If you are currently working towards this qualification this must be completed within your 1st year as a PCSO.
  • You must also ideally possess a Level 3 qualification within the meaning of Section 3 of the Education and Skills Act 2008 or the equivalent experience. Where an applicant does not hold a level 3 qualification, we will also consider training or work experience, whether undertaken in or outside England and Wales, which is considered to be equivalent to a level 3 qualification.
  • You must pass the police security vetting clearances. Honesty is of the highest importance. If you have a criminal record, this doesnt mean you wont be considered. This depends on the nature of your conviction and circumstances will be considered on an individual basis.
