PMLD Teacher Full-Time | Permanent | September 2025

Merton, South West London £39,320 - £48,532 per annum Plus SEN 1 Allowance £2,679

Every morning, the staff walk through the doors of this peaceful, purpose-built centre knowing that today might not look like a “typical” school day — but that’s exactly the point.

This is a school where communication happens in all kinds of ways — a blink, a smile, a press of a button. It’s where pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties are supported to learn and feel seen, safe, and celebrated.

We’re looking for an experienced and compassionate teacher to take on a full-time, permanent role in this specialist setting.

You’ll be leading a small class of children with complex physical and medical needs in a space designed specifically to meet them where they are — and take them somewhere new.

What does a day here look like?

The classrooms are calm and sensory-friendly. Pupils arrive with a range of needs — some in wheelchairs, some using eye gaze or switches to communicate. The team gathers: support staff who know every student inside out, therapists who collaborate on personalised plans, and a school nurse close by.

Together, you’ll deliver a truly individualised curriculum. Forget rigid targets — your focus is on meaningful progress, life skills, joy in learning, and dignity in every interaction. Some days, that might be sharing a moment of connection in a sensory room. Others might be exploring sound, texture, or movement in creative ways.

You won’t be alone. This is a team that supports each other. Training is constant, conversations are open, and everyone is here for the same reason: to give each child the very best.

What kind of teacher are we looking for?

You’re qualified (QTS required) and have real experience with PMLD, complex needs, or a similar setting

You’re confident in creating a calm, safe classroom and leading a strong team of support staff

You understand alternative communication methods — PECS, eye gaze, switches — or you’re ready to learn

You’re comfortable supporting with personal care and medical needs (with training provided)

You’re not an ECT — this role calls for someone with hands-on experience in specialist settings

Key Responsibilities of a PMLD Teacher Planning and Delivering Personalized Learning

Develop highly individualized lesson plans that cater to each student’s unique needs and abilities.

Use multisensory approaches (e.g., visual aids, tactile materials, music, and movement) to engage learners.

Supporting Communication and Interaction

Use alternative communication methods such as Makaton, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), or AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices.

Foster positive relationships and social interactions between students.

Caring for Complex Physical and Medical Needs

Collaborate with medical professionals (nurses, physiotherapists) to support students’ health needs (e.g., feeding, positioning, medication).

Assist with personal care tasks, ensuring dignity and comfort.

Creating an Inclusive and Safe Environment

Adapt the classroom setting to be accessible and stimulating.

Ensure a safe space where students can explore and learn.

Collaboration with Families and Specialists

Work closely with parents and caregivers to understand each child’s needs and celebrate progress.

Collaborate with other specialists (speech therapists, occupational therapists) to support holistic development. What’s in it for you?

The chance to teach in a purpose-built, specialist centre that feels more like a community than a school

A deeply rewarding role where you’ll genuinely change lives — not just for pupils, but for their families too

High levels of professional support, training, and collaboration with therapists and specialist teams

A warm, kind, and skilled team that shares your values

Pay matched to your experience (Inner London MPS/UPS + SEN allowance) This isn’t just another teaching job. It’s an opportunity to teach in a setting where progress looks different — and where every single step forward is something to be proud of.
