Assistant Health & Safety Advisor

Duties & responsibilities

Training delivery will be a priority for the post holder, the ability to deliver Prevention and Management of Aggression and Violence practical training within a gym environment and the ability to deliver Moving and Handling training within a mock ward environment. Generic Health & Safety Topics will also be prioritised (Risk Assessment, COSHH, Noise etc).

To assist the Health & Safety Lead Advisor and the Head of Occupational Health & Safety Service in supporting the delivery of the NHS Borders Health and Safety Management System and training delivery. To provide advice and assurance of compliance with health and safety legislation.

Key responsibilities include to produce written reports in a clear and concise manner and to write and review policies and procedures. To develop and deliver tailored Health & Safety training packages as identified e.g. Risk Assessment, Violence and Aggression and Moving & Handling, etc.

Key requirements:

  • Member of IOSH, or equivalent and NEBOSH Certificate, or equivalent, or working towards.
  • GSA Grade A Instructor Certificate desirable/or motivation to achieve.
  • Centaur Patient/Object Moving & Handling Certificate desirable.
  • Full driving license/Ability to work flexibly across the Scottish Borders.
  • Team player

NB: Interviews will include PowerPoint/Q&A followed by a Physical Assessment working within a gym environment participating in physical training (floor, seated, and standing) in group session. Permanent contract will be subject to the successful candidate achieving GSA Grade A Tutor status in the management of aggression and violence and fully committing to attending a three-week intensive tutor course, dates to be confirmed.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full-time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period, for which you would be paid, until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.
