Role summary

The Sr. Editor, Team Manager is the strategic head for their subject area in PLOS Medicine. In coordination with the Executive Editor and Editor-in-Chief, they are responsible for creating and implementing a vision for content and promoting this within PLOS Medicine and the external community. This role maintains high standards for author service and contributes to policies and procedures that support Open Science practices.

Responsibilities
  • Manage Associate and/or Senior Editors.
  • Recruit, train, manage and develop team members, setting objectives and taking accountability for the team’s progress towards objectives.
  • Manage the work of your team and collaborate with PLOS’ vendor partners to ensure editorial standards are upheld.
  • Develop the editorial vision and strategy for your team.
  • As part of the managerial team at PLOS Medicine and working with the Editorial Board, devise and recommend policies and processes appropriate for the subject area.
  • Oversee manuscripts within specific subject areas of the journal scope to ensure fast and thorough review aligned to PLOS Medicine publication criteria.
  • Take a strategic, data-driven and disciplined approach to shaping editorial policy, developing open science practices, and engaging with communities through activities that are aligned with the publishing strategy and contain measurable targets.
  • Work autonomously to support strong author service and ensure efficient and timely handling of manuscript submissions as well as the quality of the published output.
  • Ensure efficient submission handling by proactively managing the editorial workflow in your team’s subject areas.
  • Develop and manage procedures to ensure optimized submission handling in your subject areas.
  • Decide on publication ethics cases prepared by the Publication Ethics team and work with the Publication Ethics team to bring active cases to a swift resolution.
  • Develop and update editorial policies as needed.
  • Plan staff editor conference attendance in the specified research area. Represent PLOS Medicine at external meetings.
  • Contribute to the development and launch of products and services to grow adoption of open access and open science.
  • Collaborate with other editorial teams to support cross-journal activities.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Professional experience in managing peer review, making decisions based on the scientific merits of submitted content and enforcement of editorial standards for original research publications.
  • Experience managing and training staff; cross-cultural competence is desirable.
  • Excellent analytic, communication and presentation skills, both written and oral.
  • Embraces change with a positive attitude.
  • Organized and efficient with a strong problem-solving ability.
Qualifications

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Prolonged periods stationary at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Some national and international travel may be required occasionally.
  • Some flexibility to work across time zones.

The base salary range we’ve established for this position is (UK) £58,000 - £80,000, (US) $105,000 - $145,000. PLOS also offers a comprehensive benefits package summarized below.
