Job description

Role: Platform Engineer (Developer Experience)

Location: London / Hybrid

Reporting to: Platform Engineering Manager

This role offers a unique opportunity for a mid-level engineer with a strong Java background to expand into Platform Engineering. The team focuses on automation, observability, and delivering value through iterations, enhancing developer productivity with self-service tooling and standardized workflows.

The initial focus is maintaining existing Java services owned by the Developer Experience team, which is currently migrating services to the Cloud. The role will then shift to improving our Internal Developer Platform to simplify infrastructure complexities for developers, enabling efficient microservice delivery.

Success requires balancing hands-on Java service maintenance with platform architecture, CI/CD pipeline design, and developer enablement.

Typical weekly activities include:

• Maintaining Java services
• Supporting developers
• Conducting training workshops and improving documentation
• Working on platform tasks and learning new technologies
• Expanding self-service capabilities in the platform

Core Responsibilities

• Platform Development: Enhance IDP Platform, create Gitlab CI templates, standardize configuration and monitoring
• Developer Support: Participate in support rota, reduce requests through automation and self-service tooling
• Operational Excellence: Out-of-hours on-call rota (1 week/month, with additional compensation)

Required Skills

• Proficiency in modern Java, writing clean, efficient code
• Experience with JUnit and Mockito
• Strong debugging skills
• Gradle fundamentals and multi-project build management
• Dependency management and performance optimization in Gradle
• Knowledge of Spring Boot for library upgrades
• Ability to create custom Gradle plugins
• Understanding of SDLC frameworks, SALSA, and SBOMs
