Job summary

McNally Recruitment Ltd seeks a Senior Platform Engineer in London to lead the design, build and operation of a secure Azure-based platform. You will own CI/CD, IaC, containerization and observability, driving standards and automation across the engineering team.

The role requires deep Azure expertise, advanced Kubernetes and GitLab capabilities, and strong collaboration across distributed teams in a regulated environment. Hybrid work supports 1 day in office per week.

Qualifications

• AT LEAST 10 years' experience with Azure.
• Experience as a senior platform/infrastructure or cloud engineer, preferably in regulated environments.
• Strong hands-on experience designing, building and operating Microsoft Azure environments.
• Experience designing and improving CI/CD pipelines using GitLab.
• Deep knowledge of container technologies including Docker and Kubernetes, with Helm experience.
• Proficient in IaC using Terraform with reusable patterns.
• Experience implementing monitoring and observability with tools like Splunk, Prometheus or Grafana.
• Scripting expertise in PowerShell or Bash, with Python or Go for automation.
• Proficient in YAML for build, deployment and automation.
• Experience with Agile delivery (Scrum/Kanban) and Jira/Confluence.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and operate a secure, resilient and scalable Azure infrastructure estate, including CI/CD, IaC, container and observability capabilities.
• Establish and evolve engineering standards, reference architecture, guardrails and reusable platform services, promoting automation, security and operational excellence.
• Lead design and implementation of delivery automation using GitLab, Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform and DevOps practices.
• Own complex technical designs and operations, managing risk and ensuring secure, cost-effective solutions.
• Embed security, resilience, compliance, monitoring and performance considerations across platform design and delivery.
• Contribute to technical review, knowledge sharing and runbooks; maintain architecture documentation.

Senior Platform Engineer (London - 1 day in office per week)

This role requires at LEAST 10 years' experience with Azure (NOT AWS)!

• Act as a senior, hands-on engineer within the Platform & Infrastructure team.
• Design, build and operate a secure, resilient and scalable Azure infrastructure estate, including the associated CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, container and observability capabilities.
• Establish and evolve engineering standards, reference architecture, guardrails and reusable platform services, promoting consistency, automation, security, maintainability and operational excellence.
• Lead the design and implementation of software and infrastructure delivery automation using GitLab, Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform and appropriate DevOps and platform-engineering practices.
• Take ownership of complex technical designs, implementations and operational issues, managing risk and ensuring solutions are secure, supportable, and cost-effective.
• Embed security, resilience, compliance, monitoring and performance considerations throughout platform design and delivery, aligned with regulatory, Group and organisational requirements.
• Contribute to technical review, knowledge sharing and team capability development; maintain high-quality architecture documentation, standards, runbooks and operational procedures

Your profile

• Experience in toward low-level container mechanics and build pipeline optimisation.
• DevOps or SRE with deeper Docker internals, CI caching strategies, and command-line Kubernetes workload inspection.
• Proven experience in a senior platform, infrastructure or cloud engineering role, ideally within financial services or another highly regulated environment.
• Strong hands-on experience designing, building and operating Microsoft Azure environments, including core computer, networking and storage services, with a sound understanding of identity, access management, network security, governance and cloud resilience.
• Demonstrable experience designing and improving CI/CD pipelines using GitLab or comparable tooling, covering automated build, test, security assurance, deployment and release processes.
• Strong practical experience with containerisation and orchestration, including Docker, Kubernetes and Helm, alongside an understanding of GitOps principles such as declarative configuration and controlled environment promotion.
• Proven experience using Terraform to provision, configure and manage cloud and/or on-premises infrastructure, including the development of reusable, maintainable infrastructure-as-code patterns.
• Experience implementing or operating monitoring, logging and observability capabilities using tools such as Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana or equivalent.
• Strong scripting and automation capabilities using PowerShell, Bash and/or similar languages, together with practical proficiency in at least one general-purpose language such as Python or Go.
• Able to write, maintain and review code used for automation, integrations, tooling and application support, with confident use of YAML for build, deployment and operational automation.
• Experience working in Agile delivery environments, such as Scrum or Kanban, and with collaboration and delivery tooling including Jira and Confluence.
• Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills,with the abilityto collaborate effectively across distributed teams and communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences
• Able to communicate complex technical concepts, decisions and risks clearly and appropriately to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Strong technical writing skills and attention to detail.
• Proactive in documenting solutions and engineering standards.
