Job description
Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Plaster technician to join the Basildon Hospital Plaster room. You will receive training in the most up-to-date practises in casting and the use of braces, splints and other devices and will work directly alongside the Orthopaedic Surgical team to provide evidence-based care to our patients, whether in the department, on the wards or in theatre.

Responsibilities
  • Application and removal of casts, braces, splints and other orthotics.
  • Removal of rings.
  • Giving patients written and verbal instructions and advice regarding their casts and splints.
  • Record care and treatment in patients’ medical records and in the plaster room ledger to maintain an accurate record of work undertaken.
  • Assist the service manager in the daily running of the department.
  • Work under doctor’s instruction, sometimes supervised, but mainly unsupervised, and be called to work in theatre, Accident & Emergency and Wards when splints and plasters need applying.
  • Be aware of, implement and comply with the Trust’s Infection Prevention and Control, Manual Handling, and other policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Communicate with internal and external parties (electronic or verbal), including GPs, Wards and Consultants.
  • Other duties include cleaning in the workplace to maintain a safe environment, changing sheets and towels, clearing spillages and handling laundry as required.
Qualifications
  • BOA British Casting Course certificate holder or willing to work towards it in the future.
  • Band 3, rising to Band 4 on completion of Trust competencies (to be discussed).
