About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Depot based Engineering Technician to join our Rail team in Ashford.


You will be performing services, maintenance, and repairs on our specialist fleet of diesel-powered trains. Working daily in a heavy repair workshop with a close-knit team, you will complete high-quality engineering tasks. Your role will vary daily, involving systems such as pneumatic, hydraulic, electric, PLC, electronic, mechanical, and Diesel.


What you'll be doing

You will have the following responsibilities:

  • Service specialist diesel rail plant (GPCs, TRAMMs, Tampers)
  • Work on hydraulics, pneumatics, electrics, PLC
  • Follow service schedules to rail standards
  • Carry out heavy repairs ensuring quality adherence
  • Perform fault finding to 'right first time'
  • Communicate technical engineering information clearly
  • Work safely
  • Undertake specific in-house machine training
  • Work effectively alone and as part of a team
  • Handle a variety of technical and repair tasks daily

Who we're looking for

Ideal candidates will have:

  • NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent
  • A full UK driving license
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work to timescales
  • Health and safety awareness
  • Ability to meet medical standards, including passing a drugs and alcohol test
  • Experience in heavy engineering is advantageous
  • Background in HGV, LGV, agricultural machinery, cars, or military equipment
  • Experience with pneumatic, hydraulic, electric, PLC, mechanical systems, or diesel engines
  • Adaptability and versatile engineering knowledge
  • Willingness to learn new skills
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and schematics
  • Basic IT skills
