Job description

Job Title:
Plant Fitter

Reporting to:
Senior Management / Directors

Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HASWA 1974), NorPower, as your employer, has a duty to protect your health, safety, and welfare, as well as that of others affected by our business. NorPower must do whatever is reasonably practicable to achieve this.

As an employee, you also have a duty under HASWA 1974 to take care of your own health and safety and that of others affected by your actions. You must work with NorPower and your co-workers to meet their legal requirements.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Servicing, maintaining, and repairing all company vehicles, plant, and machinery to ensure safe working conditions and compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Maintain servicing and maintenance plans and associated records.
  • Maintain a reasonable stock of frequently used spare parts, oils, lubricants, etc., and assist with record-keeping and cost allocation.
  • Use and care for limited hand tools and specialised equipment provided by the company; additionally, maintain and store your own tools correctly.
  • Comply with NorPower's Health & Safety, Environment, and Quality Policies, taking responsibility for your own safety, colleagues', and visitors' safety.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and tidy work environment, including correct handling, use, and storage of hazardous substances in accordance with COSHH regulations and assessments. No new substances should be used until a COSHH risk assessment is completed with appropriate controls.
  • Ensure all waste from servicing, maintenance, and repair is disposed of according to current regulations, with relevant records maintained.
  • Perform assigned tasks safely, following instructions, safety rules, procedures, regulations, and codes of practice.
  • Conduct daily or task-specific risk assessments and understand the tasks fully before starting work, implementing appropriate controls.
  • Report unsafe practices or conditions, or any doubts about safety, to management.
  • Report misuse or lack of basic maintenance checks on plant or equipment, including vehicles and HGVs.
  • Report all accidents and near misses promptly.
  • Use PPE issued by the company as per risk assessments, store it properly, and maintain it in good condition. Check PPE before use and report defects.
  • Use all work tools, plant, and equipment correctly and safely, following manufacturer instructions and training. Report any defects.
  • Only operate plant or equipment if trained and authorised.
  • Assist with other duties and tasks as needed for the business.
Key Skills / Competencies

Essential:

  • Formal qualification in mechanical engineering
  • First aid training
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a similar role
  • Knowledge of applicable legal requirements
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills; ability to prioritise workload and work under pressure
  • Good physical fitness
  • Commercial awareness
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • Competent in operation of plant (e.g., forklifts, telehandlers, MEWPs) and safe loading/unloading of HGVs

Desirable:

  • IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent
