Planning & Scheduling Lead

SP Energy Networks (SPEN) will be delivering £5.4b of investment in the GB electricity grid over the next 5 years. As part of this, SPT Core Projects will be delivering a £2 billion portfolio of new and upgraded substations and OHL lines including the design, engineering and construction works.
The Planning & Scheduling Lead is a critical role in SPT Core Projects focussing on the coordination of planning and development activities, working as part of a multi-disciplinary PMO team and serving as the portfolio's technical Planning & Scheduling expert. The Planning & Scheduling Lead will oversee the preparation and update of the programme masterplan comprising of individual and grouped projects covering the agreed capital investment plan. This role reports to the Core PMO Manager.
What you'll be doing:
- Leads the definition, implementation and continuous improvement of Planning & Scheduling standards and ways of working across the portfolio.
- Leads and coordinates the development of detailed plans to ensure each project is captured through collaboration with Development, Engineering Design, NP&R, OCC and all other relevant Business units.
- Owns and maintains the Planning & Scheduling processes, templates, and the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) across the portfolio.
- Leads the continual improvement of standard scheduling KPIs across the portfolio to track schedule health and performance (e.g., Schedule Performance Index, milestone adherence etc.).
- Leads delivery of complex multi-million pound, multi-disciplinary and multi-contract project planning via P6 Primavera and MSPe (Microsoft Project Enterprise).
- Leads the month-end scheduling reporting process including schedule variance analysis across the portfolio.
- Ensures that network access issues and system operator input are factored into the development of the investment programme and work with outage planning as required.
- Attends recurring governance meetings as required.
- Leads P6 Primavera configuration and embedment activities across all projects in the portfolio enabling the transition in P6 from MSPe.
- Manages P6 licenses / user permissions.
- Monitors Contractor Scheduling Performance across the portfolio.
- Leads the onboarding and allocation of Planning Engineers within Core projects and supports their professional development.
- Upskills the Core planners and ensures consistent application of the Planning & Scheduling processes across the portfolios.
- Generates scheduling reports and presentations as required and feeds portfolio-wide scheduling information into the portfolio's PowerBI dashboards.
- Provides expert scheduling advice in relation to key project scheduling matters and supports resolution.
- Provide key input in the identification & assessment impacts of programme risk and change requests.
- Contributes to the continuous improvement of the Core Portfolio by championing Lessons Learned and introduction of best-in-class industry practices.
What you'll bring:
- Extensive experience (12+ years) in planning and scheduling management for large, complex EPC projects, preferably in infrastructure or energy sectors (UK transmission/distribution upgrade project experience is advantageous).
- Degree qualified in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or related fields; relevant Planning & Scheduling certifications (e.g., PMI-SP, AACE PSP) are highly desirable.
- Advanced expertise in P6 Primavera and MS Project, including implementation, configuration, and managing large-scale scheduling frameworks.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to produce high-quality reports, dashboards, and presentations tailored for senior stakeholders.
- Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence, challenge, and drive decision-making at all levels of the organisation.
- Proven track record in leading multidisciplinary teams and driving collaboration across multiple projects and contractors.
- Familiarity with NEC4 contracts and related schedule obligations (beneficial but not mandatory).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, capable of navigating conflicting requirements and providing actionable solutions.
- Experience in the development and rollout of scheduling standards and KPIs across portfolios.
- Knowledge of Power BI, with experience in integrating schedule data into portfolio-level reporting.
- Commitment to continuous improvement, with a track record of embedding lessons learned and industry best practices into scheduling processes.
Minimum Criteria:
- Experience in planning and scheduling management within NEC3/NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC) frameworks, preferably in large-scale Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) capital projects.
- Extensive expertise in P6 Primavera and MSPe software for planning and scheduling complex, multi-disciplinary projects, including integration and interfacing across multiple schedules.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, proactively identify schedule risks and interface challenges, and drive optimal scheduling solutions.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a high-pressure environment managing teams and influencing stakeholders.
