Job Description
Role Purpose
- You will work with teams of professional officers in the delivery of policy and monitoring to support the functions of the planning service and be responsible for providing high-quality, outcomes-focused services that meet the needs of clients, including the Cabinet, committees, steering groups, other council teams, and elected members.
- You will collaborate with local partners/stakeholders and other departments within the Council to identify and manage policy and monitoring opportunities that support the Council’s key objectives. This includes linking these to the determination of planning applications, and the preparation and implementation of planning policies, guidance, projects, or other activities related to the town planning service.
Responsibilities
- Deliver complex and specialised planning policy expertise within the planning services, including contributing to development management, planning policy, and delivering planning-related projects in line with recognised standards and plans.
- Contribute to decisions and recommendations on development management, planning policy, and projects that affect the borough’s development, environment, economy, and community. This involves research, evaluation, and case work that can impact land development value, housing affordability, and environmental sustainability.
- Provide clear advice on the statutory planning process, ensuring impacts of planning and transport policies are monitored and reported effectively. Your advice should consider legal, reputational, and financial risks to the council.
- Support team collaboration on climate emergency initiatives, transport planning, and related policies and projects, demonstrating project management skills and cooperation with colleagues and partners.
- Promote innovation and service excellence to enhance the effectiveness of planning services.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to the level of the role.
Requirements
- A degree in a relevant subject or a professional qualification, with evidence of ongoing professional development and experience in management concepts and practices.
- Deep understanding of urban planning and regeneration issues in a major city context, and how planning contributes to these areas.
- Knowledge of equalities issues relevant to Southwark and inner London, including social exclusion challenges.
- Experience providing expertise on the climate emergency.
- Experience in strategic planning and decision-making at local and regional levels, engaging with diverse communities to achieve positive outcomes.
