Job Description
Orion Group is supporting a leading Civil Engineering client to recruit an experienced and motivated Planning Engineer to join their team. As part of this team, you will play a key role in delivering large civil engineering projects that provide critical infrastructure to enable future renewable developments across Scotland. The role requires initial work from regional offices in Inverness and Glasgow, with site visits during project delivery. The projects are within the energy infrastructure sector, building new substations and HVDC converter stations to support Scotland's transition to net zero.
Your Responsibilities:
As a Planning Engineer, reporting to the Senior Planning Engineer/Planning Manager, your responsibilities will include:
- Developing and maintaining detailed programmes in P6 from first principles, including resource loading.
- Integrating and managing sub-contractor and supplier programmes with our own.
- Interpreting information from tender and project documentation.
- Understanding civil construction techniques and developing them into workable programmes.
- Coordinating with estimators and commercial teams on programme aspects.
- Compiling narratives, phasing, reports, and supporting documents for tenders and projects.
- Owning the programme to drive project delivery.
- Utilising various planning techniques and tools to communicate effectively.
- Supporting and communicating programme, risk, and commercial issues to operational teams.
- Supporting collaborative planning workshops with clients, operational teams, and subcontractors.
- Updating and monitoring project progress, compiling reports against requirements.
- Managing changes in programmes and supporting commercial teams.
- Evaluating supply chain and subcontract programmes.
- Ensuring compliance with business processes and systems.
- Maintaining awareness of latest construction techniques.
Who are we looking for?
- Experience delivering programmes under NEC contracts is preferable.
- At least 5 years of experience in Civil Engineering contracting, with the ability to manage own workload and support senior team members.
- Potentially suitable for an experienced Sub-Agent seeking a change.
- A qualification in Civil Engineering/Construction to HND level or equivalent is desirable but not essential.
- Competent in various planning software.
- Proven ability to develop, own, and drive programmes.
- Effective communication skills with all parties.
- Comfortable with client-facing presentations.
- Experience working closely with site construction teams and understanding programme requirements.
- Logical thinker with an ordered working approach.
- Ability to work under challenging timescales.
- Experience in producing project control information in Excel and Power BI is advantageous.
- Tender experience is advantageous.
- Strong commercial and contractual understanding, especially regarding NEC contracts and change management.
