Job summary

South Gloucestershire Council is seeking a Planning Enforcement Officer to help create safe, well‑planned communities. You will manage a varied caseload and work across the full planning process, from pre‑application discussions to post‑decision enforcement.

The role requires a professional planning qualification or equivalent experience, strong understanding of planning legislation, and excellent communication. A full, valid driving licence and hybrid working with office in Yate are expected.

Qualifications

• Professional planning qualification or relevant degree, or equivalent planning-related experience.
• Strong understanding of planning legislation and policy interpretation; ability to interpret guidance and negotiate effectively.
• Highly organised with ability to manage workloads and meet timescales.
• Confident communicator, both oral and written; able to use diplomacy in difficult situations.

Responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of approximately 60-80 planning enforcement cases across the full planning process.
• Negotiate, write reports, interpret policy and enable decision making from pre‑application to post‑decision enforcement.
• Provide a high‑quality service to internal and external customers with professionalism and expertise.
• Display decisive decision‑making in complex or unprecedented situations.
• Undertake field visits to investigate alleged breaches of planning control when required.
