Planning Enforcement Investigator

Job Description

How you'll make a difference

As a Planning Enforcement Investigator, you will help make South Gloucestershire a safe place to live, visit, and work. Working as part of a team, you will contribute to maintaining a high-quality built environment for residents and visitors.

We are recruiting for either two part-time vacancies (18.5 hours each) or one full-time vacancy (37 hours). Please specify your preference in your application.

What you will be doing

  • Investigate complaints regarding breaches of planning control and monitor the implementation of planning permissions.
  • Establish site history and planning constraints, conduct site visits, gather evidence, and interview complainants, offenders, and other stakeholders.
  • Analyze evidence to assess compliance with planning regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external parties, representing the Planning Enforcement Service and South Gloucestershire Council, and uphold the council's core values.

What we need from you

  • Experience in planning or investigations.
  • Knowledge of planning enforcement legislation and policies, experience with scaled drawings and maps, and proficiency with computer systems.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with diplomacy and decisiveness.
  • Organizational skills to manage workloads and meet deadlines.
  • Confidence and competence to conduct lone-site visits.

Additional information

  • Must have a valid driving license and access to a vehicle or alternative transportation, as travel across the area is required.
  • This is a hybrid role, involving work at the Yate office, in the community, and from home.
  • Occasional outside normal hours work may be required for investigations.

Interview dates: Between 15th - 26th September 2025.
