Job summary

The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) in Oban seeks a Post-Doctoral Researcher to support plankton-climate studies and AI classifier development. You will work on the SEUPB Acclimatise project and help operate real-time plankton counters and data dashboards.

The role requires a PhD in a relevant field, expertise in Django, Python, Linux, and ML with PyTorch, plus strong communication for project reports and publications. Remote work may be possible within this UK-based post.

Qualifications

  • PhD in marine/environmental science or computing essential.
  • Experience with a web framework (Django) and Python.
  • Linux systems administration and data pipelines.
  • Hands-on ML/AI experience with image classification (PyTorch).
  • Knowledge of phytoplankton ecology and marine instrumentation.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and develop AI classifier and related software for data collection, transfer and storage.
  • Operate and support IFCB deployments with AFBI collaboration.
  • Analyze collected data and contribute to reports and publications.
  • Interact with AFBI staff, with periodic visits to Belfast and possible seagoing.
