Job summary

Cummins Inc. is seeking a motivated Manufacturing Engineering placement student for the Value Package Introduction (VPI) team in Huddersfield. The role focuses on supporting new product launches, applying LEAN practices, and helping to design efficient assembly layouts.

You will work on cross-functional projects, develop process improvements, and gain exposure to CREO/CAD documentation and data analysis. Summer 2027 start, onsite with weekly flexibility for relocation.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree or similar.
• Excellent communication and a willingness to learn.
• IT skills including MS Office; CREO/CAD experience beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Participate in New Product Launch Projects from concept to Start of Production.
• Apply LEAN tools and 5S to drive improvements in manufacturing.
• Plan, design, purchase and implement integrated processes and assembly layouts.
• Compile and present KPI data; chair meetings as required.
• Work with the team to implement process improvements in assembly and machining.
• Review assembly workstation documentation and graphics using CREO/CAD.

Job description

PLACEMENT STUDENT – MANUFACTURING ENGINEER-VPI (12 months)

We are looking for an enthusiastic Manufacturing Engineering student to join our team specializing in Manufacturing for our Value Package Introduction (VPI) Engineering business in Huddersfield, United Kingdom. During your placement with us, you will learn how a major global organization operates, gaining the tools and exposure you will need to become an expert in the industry.

The requirements are to be onsite for 3 days per week so you will need to be able to travel or relocate to the location on your own behalf.

This role is available to candidates who qualify for a placement year and will commence Summer of 2027.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

• Participate in New Product Launch Projects, supporting the Manufacturing Function from Concept through to Start of Production
• Using LEAN tools (including 5S) and methodologies to drive continuous improvements across the Manufacturing process
• Planning, design, purchase and implementation of integrated manufacturing and assembly processes, managing different projects of varying sizes to successful conclusions
• Compiling and presenting data on Key Performance Indicators, chairing meetings to discuss required details
• Work as part of a team implementing process improvements within the Assembly & Machining Processes
• Participate in the design/layout of new and existing workstations to improve efficiency and accommodate new tooling and products
• Review/develop assembly workstation documentation including assembly graphics using CREO/CAD

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

• We are looking for a wide range of candidates studying towards a degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar
• Self-motivated with excellent communication skills, and a keen willingness to learn
• A good level of IT skills including the use of Microsoft applications, Minitab experience would also be beneficial although is not essential
• Experience with CREO/CAD would also be beneficial, although it is not essential
