Cummins Inc. is offering a placement for an Electronic Controls student in Darlington, UK. You will engage in configuring, tuning, testing and releasing software and ECU tools within a dynamic Engine Business Unit.

The role requires onsite presence three days a week and may involve relocation for the placement period. This Summer 2027 start position is designed for students undertaking a 12-month industry placement.

Qualifications

• Currently studying a STEM subject at degree level with an allowance for a 12-month industry placement.
• Ability to learn quickly, with a positive attitude and keen curiosity.
• Ability to work well with others and build positive team relationships.
• Understand engineering rules and write clear, professional technical documents.
• Ability to follow problem-solving processes to resolve issues.
• Some experience or knowledge of MATLAB and Simulink is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Validating calibrations for the Engine Control Unit (ECU).
• Planning and carrying out verification and validation testing for calibrations and engine controllers.
• Analyzing field data, troubleshooting issues, and supporting the wider team.
• Preparing and presenting technical documentation for design reviews.
• Work in cross-functional teams to develop products and resolve issues.

Placement Student - Electronic Controls

We are looking for an enthusiastic Electronic Controls Placement Student to join our Engine Business Unit team in Darlington, United Kingdom. You will support the team to configure (tune), integrate, test, and release software, electronic control units, and tools into an electronic system that controls the operation of Cummins’ products in a variety of customer applications.

During your placement with us, you will learn how a major global organisation operates, gaining the tools and exposure you will need to become an expert in the industry and power your potential!

The requirements are to be onsite for 3 days per week, so you will need to be able to travel or relocate to the location on your own behalf.

This role is available to candidates who qualify for a placement year and will commence in Summer 2027.

In this role, you will make an impact by:

• Validating calibrations for the Engine Control Unit (ECU).
• Planning and carrying out verification and validation testing for developed calibrations and engine controllers.
• Analyzing data from the field and end users, troubleshooting and resolving issues of any size, and supporting the wider team in doing so.
• Preparing and presenting technical documentation for design reviews as part of product development.
• Work in cross-functional teams to develop products and resolve issues.

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

• To be currently studying a STEM subject at degree level, with an allowance for a 12-month industry placement
• A positive attitude towards learning new things, with the confidence to ask questions and the ability to learn quickly.
• Ability to work well with others and build positive working relationships within the team.
• Understand how engineering rules, guidelines and best practices are applied. And be able to write clear and professional technical documents, such as test reports and design review material.
• Ability to follow problem-solving processes to resolve issues.
