Job summary

Morson Human Resources Limited is recruiting a Pipework Component Design Engineer in Manchester to join the design team. You will design high-integrity pipework components and systems for nuclear facilities, leading cross-functional work and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards in a hybrid working environment.

The role requires strong knowledge of pipework routing, design substantiation, and collaboration with fabrication, QA/QC and site teams across the project lifecycle.

Qualifications

  • Qualified to HNC or degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Chartered or working towards Chartered Engineer.
  • Experience across full project lifecycle: concept to installation.

Responsibilities

  • Design pipework components to nuclear standards such as EN 13480, ASME III NB, NCD, ASME B31.1, RCC-M, PED and ONR.
  • Balance complex and conflicting requirements to deliver integrated technical solutions.
  • Produce design substantiation reports, technical specifications, and design justifications.
  • Review drawings, isometrics, and general arrangements per design codes.
  • Use optioneering and systems engineering to meet product requirements.
  • Collaborate with fabrication, QA/QC and site teams early in design.
  • Support audits and regulatory inspections.

Pipework Component Design Engineer

Manchester

Hybrid working arrangements

The Pipework Component Design Engineer will be responsible for the design and development of high-integrity pipework components and systems for nuclear facilities. This includes leading the design of both nuclear and conventional pipework systems across the Rolls-Royce SMR power station, ensuring full compliance with stringent safety, quality, and regulatory standards.

(This is not a Pipestress, Pipe Routing Integration or CAD role, however prior experience in these areas will be beneficial for effective collaboration with the respective teams)

Key role responsibilities / criteria:

Design pipework components in accordance with nuclear standards such as EN 13480, ASME III NB, NCD, ASME B31.1, RCC-M, PED and relevant ONR (Office for Nuclear Regulation) requirements.

Balancing complex and often conflicting requirements to deliver integrated technical solutions that meet maturity, programme, and governance expectations.

Produce design substantiation reports, technical specifications, and design justifications.

Review detailed drawings, isometrics, and general arrangements in line with applicable design codes.

Use optioneering and systems engineering techniques to deliver design solutions against product requirements.

Desirables we are looking for:

Qualified to HNC, degree level or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.

Chartered, or working towards, Mechanical Engineer (or equivalent).

Experienced in working across the full project lifecycle:

Concept and detailed design.

Pipework routing and layout.

Fabrication and installation support.

Field experience in pipework fabrication and installation, with a strong understanding of practical challenges and construction methodologies.

Familiarity with nuclear safety standards, design assurance, and regulatory frameworks.

Understanding of the nuclear supply chain, including procurement, material traceability, and quality assurance.

Knowledge of product verification and validation methods.

Experienced in technical requirements and review supplier design submissions resolve technical queries throughout procurement and manufacturing lifecycle.

Experienced in collaboration with fabrication, QA/QC, and site installation teams early in the design phase to incorporate practical insights, ensure design feasibility, and align with downstream execution requirements.

Proficient in resolving technical queries and participating in audits and inspections with regulatory bodies or customers.

Experienced in supporting and participating in design reviews, DFMEA, PFMEA, and ALARP assessments.

Relevant product development experience and capability:

The candidate shall have the ability to apply both practical experience and strong theoretical knowledge to develop robust, safety-critical piping solutions.

Demonstrates sound engineering judgment and logical decision making, ensuring designs are not only technically compliant but also constructible and maintainable.

Programme development & delivery

The candidate shall demonstrate strong attention to technical detail, along with the ability to evaluate design maturity in relation to project risks and evolving requirements.

The candidate shall have the ability to interpret and be required to manage high levels of ambiguity within the programme and work closely with the Pipework Manager to provide control, direction and support.
