Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse to join the Nurse-Led PICC placement service based on J80, in the Chemotherapy Day Unit in Bexley Wing at St James's Hospital. This is a part-time role, 20 hours/week over 2 days.

The successful candidate should have insight and/or experience in cannulation and central venous access insertion and care. The team places approximately 25 PICC lines per week for Oncology and Haematology patients.

A full training and competency package will be provided to help the candidate become proficient in PICC placement, although previous experience in this field is advantageous.

Excellent communication and leadership skills are essential, as the role involves supporting communication and education with healthcare professionals and patients throughout the oncology CSU. Knowledge or experience of audit would be an advantage, as maintaining safe standards within the clinical environment is a key part of the role.

The PICC line insertion service at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, based in the chemotherapy day case unit (J80), is expanding. There is an opportunity for someone two days a week to become proficient and independent in placing PICC lines.

We are eager to hear from registered nurses interested in working within a close-knit, supportive nurse-led team that strives to provide the best possible care and has an interest in central venous access devices.

The experience and clinical skills gained in this area are extensive. You will work alongside an experienced PICC line placer involved in your training, as well as a dedicated acute lines team to guide you through learning and clinical competencies.

Job responsibilities

The jobholder will assist the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse with 24-hour responsibility for managing the ward/department effectively. They will contribute to professional, clinical, managerial leadership, and supervision of the nursing team. The role involves developing a patient-centered philosophy that ensures compassionate, safe, and high-quality care. Additionally, the job involves supporting the administrative and financial management of the ward to promote cost-effective resource use.

As an experienced nurse, the jobholder will coordinate activities on the ward, ensuring effective communication, and support both qualified and unqualified staff. They will play a key role in assessing patient care needs, developing, implementing, and evaluating care programs.

The job involves working closely with the Senior Sister to manage and lead the department daily, ensuring efficient service delivery, and contributing to the future planning of outpatient care. Specific areas include:

  • Placement of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs) for Oncology and Haematology patients from Monday to Friday, supporting the trust's PICC list.
  • Leading and coordinating education for healthcare professionals and patients regarding central line care and maintenance, with support from Senior Chemotherapy Nurses.
  • Leading audit and service development to ensure safety and positive patient experiences.
  • Providing advice and troubleshooting for managing complications with central venous access.
  • Ensuring resource use is appropriate and waste is minimized.
  • Keeping up-to-date with innovations in central venous access.
