Overview

An exciting temporary opportunity to join the accredited pulmonary rehabilitation team as an Associate Practitioner. This post supports the physiotherapy-led team to deliver pulmonary rehabilitation to patients across Newcastle upon Tyne, in the community (Kenton Park Sports Centre) and at hospital sites (mainly Freeman Hospital). The team consists of physiotherapists and associate practitioners dedicated to delivering high-quality care. Pulmonary rehabilitation is an evidence-based treatment that can improve quality of life through exercise and education. This role is suitable for an experienced rehabilitation or therapy assistant looking to further develop knowledge and skills. Basic knowledge of this client group and experience delivering exercise programmes in a group setting are essential. Experience in delivering basic education to a group of patients will be beneficial. The post involves one-to-one assessments with patients, both over the telephone and face to face, and strong communication skills to build rapport with patients by telephone and in person.

Responsibilities
  • Carrying out telephone and face-to-face assessments with patients
  • Delivering exercise to groups of patients and independently evaluating progress, adapting where required
  • Delivering education to groups of patients
  • Independently carrying out discharge assessments
  • Carrying out administration tasks using Word, Excel and the NHS electronic records for note writing and letters
  • Inputting data into national and in-house databases
  • Attending and delivering teaching and training to the team
  • Attending team meetings where applicable
  • Managing own Quality Improvement projects with the team to support service development
  • Identifying and addressing own training needs and learning
  • Working with students who come to work within the team
  • Flexibility to accommodate working arrangements that suit the service and the patient need
  • Maintaining confidentiality in line with Caldicott and Information Governance
  • Cross-site work between hospital and community venues; a valid UK driving license is essential
Requirements
  • Basic knowledge of the pulmonary rehabilitation client group and experience delivering exercise programmes in a group setting
  • Experience delivering basic education to groups of patients
  • Ability to conduct assessments (face-to-face and telephone) and deliver treatment based on standard operating procedures
  • Confident IT skills (Word, Excel) and use of NHS/Electronic Records systems
  • Full training provided; competencies will be carried out by the pulmonary rehabilitation team
  • Clinical administration duties, including documentation and database entry
  • UK driving license required due to cross-site working
  • Days of work: Wednesdays and Fridays; interview date: Wednesday 22 October 2025; hours: 13 per week
