Job overview

We are currently seeking to recruit a Physiotherapy Support Worker within the Community Paediatric Therapies Service. This is an integrated therapy service including occupational therapists, physiotherapists, therapy support workers and administrative staff. The Paediatric Physiotherapy service supports babies, children and young people across the South Tees region. The service is based in the community at West Acklam Centre.

We looking for a dynamic person who is interested and motivated to join our established team of Paediatric Physiotherapists and therapy support workers. The post holder will work with babies, children and young people in a variety of settings including home, nursery/school and clinic settings. Previous experience of working with babies and children, young people and/or working within health settings will be helpful, although training will be given.

The Paediatric Physiotherapy Service is a well-established, progressive and dynamic service, which continues to develop within the Trust. The team is friendly and supportive. Mentorship for this role will be available from the clinical staff.

Main duties of the job

  • Perform duties under the professional responsibility of a Physiotherapist in the treatment of children aged 0-19 years using a range of specialist therapeutic treatments. Organise and deliver highly skilled support work.
  • To work without direct supervision and be responsible for assessing patient progress and ensuring regular communication with the senior physiotherapists regarding treatment and/or progress and discharge of all patients.
  • To undertake Physiotherapy intervention with babies/children/young people and their carers as directed by qualified staff.
  • To run groups independently following advice from qualified Physiotherapist.
  • Working independently with more complex cases or situations requiring non-standard programmes / intervention, to have own caseload.
  • Recognise own limitations and pass onto the Physiotherapist for intervention.
  • To communicate effectively with other agencies and maintain a good working relationship while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Complete basic reports and clinical record keeping in a timely manner as required by the Paediatric Therapies Service and the Trust

Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrates an understanding and knowledge of childhood development.
  • Relevant knowledge gained working with children/young people ideally with long term conditions
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to adapt these to the individual needs of the patient/family.
  • Ability to use own initiative in a constantly changing working environment
  • Ability to work independently but also within a team.
  • IT literacy for electronic patient records.
  • Able to access independent transport for travel to community visits.
  • Knowledge gained working as a therapy support worker.

Qualifications

  • GCSE/equivalent in Maths and English.
  • Knowledge acquired through in-house training, short course and experience to NVQ 3 level or equivalent, plus knowledge of specific patient conditions, forms of therapy, acquired through training, experienceor NVQ3 in relevant subject.
  • Safeguarding training
  • Training in relevant subjects to the post obtained in a different role/setting.

Experience

  • Experience of working with children/young people (ideally with long term conditions) in a healthcare, education or social care setting.
  • Experience of working in a team.
  • Experience of independent decision making (ideally in complex situations).
  • Experience of using different verbal and non-verbal communication styles with a variety of children/young people.
