Description:
COMPOS (Comprehensive Oxford Mathematics and Physics Online School) is a large-scale outreach project at the University of Oxford, https://compos.web.ox.ac.uk/tutors. We develop the talent of STEM-keen students in UK state schools, particular those from schools with no expert physics teacher or from backgrounds historically disadvantaged in STEM. Students work with us from late October through to July in Years 10 and 12, and from October to February/March for students doing examinations, Years 11 and 13. This coming academic year we expect to enrol about 1000 students.
COMPOS tutors deliver tutorials online after school hours; during evenings and at weekends. Communication with your group and programme delivery is done through our secure online learning platform. Our team of staff will support you by organising the programme of study, introducing you to your group and maintaining close communication throughout the year. We set the curriculum, monitor quality, ensure the safety of all, and evaluate the programme's impact.
You are assigned a tutorial group of about 8 students from the same school year. Every year group follows the same set of topics and assignments, supported by supplementary webinars from our lead tutors. We supply lesson plans and markschemes for all assignments. You are responsible for delivering interactive and engaging weekly 90-minute online tutorials throughout the course. You will also mark any work submitted by the students, supply COMPOS staff with data on attendance and grades, and return marked work to students in a timely manner. Each tutor typically works 4 hours weekly. To be eligible, you need to be at least in your second year of a degree, and capable of tutoring a very capable 18 year old in physics and maths.
