Responsibilities include:
- Serve as surgical first assistant to general surgeons performing elective and emergency surgeries. Secondary assistance will be provided to surgical subspecialties such as ENT, Urology, and Gynecology for elective cases.
- Provide initial evaluation and treatment for surgical patients, including physical examinations in the emergency department, following assessment by ER physicians.
- Prepare patients for evaluation and treatment by attending surgeons, ensuring medical clearance for pre-op patients by ordering necessary consultations and tests.
- Respond to nurses’ calls and assist with discharges, documentation, and other duties for surgical inpatients at the request of an attending surgeon.
- Coordinate with the Hospital Physician Service for emergency admissions and management of pre- and post-operative patients.
- Provide post-operative care in Skilled Nursing Facilities, including wound care and patient education, as time permits.
- Collaborate with surgeons to coordinate clinical services and follow their clinical priorities and assignments.
- Maintain accurate documentation of clinical work and billing in a timely manner.
- Hold all necessary certifications and privileges as a surgical PA.
- Work closely with the attending surgeon, respecting scope of practice limitations.
- Work effectively under pressure, independently, and know when to seek help.
- Participate actively in healthcare teams, including quality improvement initiatives.
- Adhere to all relevant policies, bylaws, and regulations.
Additional requirements include:
- Certification as a PA or licensure as a Nurse Practitioner approved by CAHEA.
- At least 2 years of surgical experience, including OR first assisting preferred.
- ACLS certification within 3 months of employment.
- BLS certification.
- US Department of Justice and Massachusetts DEA registrations for prescribing privileges.
The position is per diem, with rotating days, occasional weekends, and holidays, based at Falmouth Hospital, Massachusetts. The role is classified as entry level, full-time in healthcare provider industry.
