Overview
The Riverview Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner assists, monitors, and manages the day-to-day needs of patients as requested by, in conjunction with, and under the supervision of a physician. Performs the duties and responsibilities of a Physician Assistant according to customary and generally accepted medical standards.
Shift Needed
Previous acute/care ICU experience required.
- 8pm-6am, 4 days per week
- The PA or NP will cover ICU/SDU. No OR coverage.
- Manage ICU and step-down areas; assist with overnight admissions.
- Collaborate with the on-call ICU intensivist.
Responsibilities
- Obtain detailed and accurate patient histories, identify problems, and present information to the supervising physician.
- Chart via written, dictation, or electronic means: admission notes, history and physicals, consultations, daily encounter notes, urgent evaluations, minor procedures, and post-operative notes.
- Prescribe medications in accordance with laws and regulations under supervision of a licensed physician, with approval from the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners. Sign prescriptions with own name and license number, as well as supervising physician’s.
- Assist supervising surgeon in the operating room when a second assistant is necessary.
- Assist in procedure rooms when a qualified physician is present and a second assistant is not needed.
- Write post-operative/post-procedure notes and orders for the supervising physician.
- Manage post-procedure patient care as requested by the primary physician.
- Perform IV starts, Foley catheter and nasogastric tube insertions, irrigate Foley catheters, order blood transfusions, venipuncture, and debridements.
- Exhibit organizational, communication, leadership skills, initiative, accountability, judgment, and decision-making.
- Assist physicians with office functions, manage prescription prior authorizations, and resolve patient message issues requiring clinical support.
- Participate in research trials, collecting and entering data.
- Adapt care to meet the needs of diverse patient populations, communicating effectively at their level.
- Serve as a resource to healthcare personnel and participate in educational programs.
- Greet patients and visitors courteously, making them feel welcome.
- Adhere to hospital standards, safety policies, and organizational competencies.
- Perform other duties or projects as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
- Completion of an approved Physician Assistant program accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education.
Licenses and Certifications Required
- Physician Assistant License
- Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification
Additional Qualifications
- Graduate of an NLN/AACN accredited nursing program
- Master’s Degree
- Maintain clinical competencies through continuing education and practice as mandated.
- Experience in relevant patient care settings or as regulated.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Prepared Advanced Practice Nurse
- Minimum of 3 years professional experience
- Strong organizational and computer skills
- Effective communication skills
- Emotional intelligence, critical thinking, interpersonal skills
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities
- Valid driver’s license
Additional Licenses and Certifications
- NJ State Registered Nurse License
- Advanced Practice Nurse Certification (with Master’s Degree)
- AHA Basic Health Care Life Support (BLS) Certification
- CPR certification (preferred)
