Job description

The Physical Therapist I job is primarily responsible for the delivery of physical therapy care to the patient population to which she/he is assigned and the recording of that care in the hospital medical record.

The Physical Therapist acts as a consultant to various patient clinics, provides instruction to PT support staff, students, personnel of other disciplines within VCUHS, and patient and/or family members. Therapists may also rotate through our various clinical service areas.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
  • Licensed (or licensure eligible) by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Physical Therapist
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
  • Current license by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Physical Therapist
  • Current CPR Certification if required by clinic or practice area
Experience REQUIRED:
  • New graduate to up to 2 years of work experience as a Physical Therapist
Experience PREFERRED:
  • Previous affiliation or work experience at a similar facility
Education/training REQUIRED:
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Physical Therapy
Education/training PREFERRED:
  • Masters or Doctoral Degree from an accredited School of Physical Therapy
Independent action(s) required:
  • Patient evaluation and implementation of plan of care, discharge planning. Ordering equipment.
  • Representing department at rounds and discharge conferences. Scheduling and charging patients.
Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable):
  • Employee may have supervisory responsibilities of Physical Therapist Assistants, Rehab Technicians, students, and volunteers.
  • Employee is a member of a self-directed team and applies his knowledge and experience in daily clinic problem solving.
  • The team will bring unresolved issues to departmental manager for assistance and guidance in their resolution.
Additional position requirements:
  • Employee is expected to share in weekend and holiday schedule expectations of the department or have a fluctuation of daily work hours from 8 AM to 7 PM based on patient population needs.
  • Age Specific groups served: Pediatrics, Adolescence, Adults, Geriatrics
Physical Requirements:
  • Physical: Lifting 50-100 lbs.
  • Activities: Frequent bending, Walking (distance), Climbing (steps, ladder, other), Reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive)
  • Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, Reasoning, Problem solving, Hearing, Speak clearly, Write legibly, Reading, Logical thinking
  • Emotional: Fast pace environment, Steady pace, Able to handle multiple priorities, Frequent and intense customer interactions, Noisy environment, Able to adapt to frequent change
